Portugal has been a European example in integrating renewable energy into its electrical system. However, after the Iberian blackout on April 28th, hasty accusations emerged, blaming renewables \u2014 without factual basis.  <\/strong><\/p><p id=\"ember649\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">The truth? The incident resulted from failures in the synchronization mechanisms of the European power grid, not from renewable energy production. This article analyzes available data, debunks myths, and reaffirms the strategic role of renewables for the country&#8217;s energy autonomy and resilience.  <\/p><p id=\"ember651\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__heading-3\"><strong>In recent days, we have witnessed a brutal attack on renewable energy production in Portugal. Journalists, commentators, and former leaders are quick to parrot political rhetoric, pointing fingers at renewable energy as the cause of the Iberian blackout on April 28th. But the arguments are weak and misinformed.  <\/strong><\/p><p id=\"ember652\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">According to information from REN and the Spanish (REE) and French (RTE) operators, what failed were protection and synchronization mechanisms of the European power grid, leading to a phase shift that ultimately caused an automatic and widespread disconnection [1][2].<\/p><p id=\"ember653\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">From the perspective of electricity generation, <strong>Portugal is considered a European success story in the integration of renewable sources<\/strong>, with stability and security of supply. Frequently, more than 60% of the electricity consumed comes from renewable sources, namely hydro, wind, and solar [3]. Currently, the value of active contracts is \u20ac3\/MWh [4][5]. <\/li><li>For mini-producers (up to 250 kW), in 2011 the tariff started at \u20ac250\/MWh, progressively decreasing to \u20ac151\/MWh in 2013. Currently, the value of active contracts is \u20ac3\/MWh [4][6]. <\/li><\/ul><p id=\"ember658\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">These schemes were abolished with the entry into force of Decree-Law no. 153\/2014, which completely reformed the sector. Since then, <strong>the priority has shifted to self-consumption<\/strong>, allowing any consumer to produce their own electricity, using it locally and selling only the surplus to the grid [7].<\/p><h2 id=\"ember659\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__heading-3\"><strong>For projects up to 1 MW, it became possible to sell energy directly to the grid, without a subsidized tariff:<\/strong><\/h2><ul><li>Either through public auctions, with competitive prices;<\/li><li>Or at market price, minus 10% for technical losses, even if, in the vast majority of cases, these losses are zero because they are located near consumption points.<\/li><\/ul><h2 id=\"ember661\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__heading-3\"><strong>Large-Scale Plants<\/strong><\/h2><p id=\"ember662\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">In the most recent auctions, for projects above 1MW, the awarded values were globally competitive:<\/p><ul><li>2020 Auction: minimum tariff awarded of \u20ac11.14\/MWh, for a 15-year contract [9].<\/li><li>2019 Auction: average values between \u20ac14\/MWh and \u20ac20\/MWh, also for long-term contracts [10].<\/li><\/ul><p id=\"ember664\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">Developers are responsible for building all infrastructure connecting to the Public Service Electricity Grid (RESP), bearing the interconnection costs.<\/p><p id=\"ember665\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">It is true that many of these large-scale projects have raised concerns regarding land use planning and environmental impact. Future investment should focus on distributed generation and collective self-consumption, which are more resilient and have a smaller territorial footprint. <\/p><h2 id=\"ember666\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__heading-3\"><strong>Energy Autonomy: The Facts<\/strong><\/h2><p id=\"ember667\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">It is important to answer, with data, the question many are asking: has the closure of coal-fired power plants in Sines and Pego compromised Portugal&#8217;s energy autonomy?<\/p><blockquote id=\"ember668\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__blockquote\"><p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-19\" src=\"https:\/\/www.advancedway.pt\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/cropped-advanced-300x300.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"17\" height=\"17\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.advancedway.pt\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/cropped-advanced-300x300.png 300w, https:\/\/www.advancedway.pt\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/cropped-advanced-150x150.png 150w, https:\/\/www.advancedway.pt\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/cropped-advanced-270x270.png 270w, https:\/\/www.advancedway.pt\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/cropped-advanced-192x192.png 192w, https:\/\/www.advancedway.pt\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/cropped-advanced-180x180.png 180w, https:\/\/www.advancedway.pt\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/cropped-advanced-32x32.png 32w, https:\/\/www.advancedway.pt\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/11\/cropped-advanced.png 512w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 17px) 100vw, 17px\" \/>  The answer is<strong> no.<\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote><p id=\"ember669\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">During the April 28th black start, the country was disconnected from the interconnection with Spain and managed to restore supply with its own internal resources.<\/p><p id=\"ember670\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">Before the \u201cblackout,\u201d Portugal had an autonomy rate of 84%, resorting to imports essentially with the aim of storing energy for later commercialization \u2014 a practice that, incidentally, was observed on the day itself until 8:00 AM. This requires units that can start without external support \u2014 such as hydroelectric power plants with reservoirs, gas turbines, or batteries. <\/p>\n<h2 id=\"ember675\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__heading-3\"><strong>So, Where Can We Improve?<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p id=\"ember676\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__paragraph\">If we want to strengthen the system&#8217;s resilience to future events, it is necessary to act on several fronts:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Emergency plan for power failures \u2013 allowing coordinated management of load shedding and critical services;<\/li>\n<li>Reinforcement of power plants with black start contracts \u2013 ensuring autonomous recovery capability;<\/li>\n<li>Definitely strengthen the interconnection in the Pyrenees with Central Europe, via France;<\/li>\n<li>Study and implementation of an electrical interconnection with Morocco \u2013 diversifying connections and increasing resilience.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<div><br><\/div>\n<p id=\"ember678\" class=\"ember-view reader-text-block__heading-3\"><strong>Renewable energy is not the problem \u2014 it is an essential part of Portugal&#8217;s energy, climate, and strategic solution. We are on the right path; it is important to reinforce technical truth and not yield to opportunistic discourses. <\/strong><\/p>\n<p id=\"ember678\" class=\"ember-view
